You know what’s perfect for a slightly chilly fall evening? And old-fashioned. You know what’s even better? The occasional twist on a classic.
I’ve made cinnamon simple syrup in the past for specialty drinks. It’s very easy and delicious, but it takes time. Not only do you have to boil sugar, water, and cinnamon (oh, the waiting..) — but then you have to let the concoction cool before enjoying it. Last night, I did not have enough foresight to think of this in advance.
Oh Yeah
and I didn’t have any bitters… or an orange.
Instead, I thought I’d try a simplified old-fashioned with what I had ready. I wanted to see if I could get the sugar to dissolve without the boiling step.
Though perhaps it wasn’t up to a master bartender’s standards, it worked for me and I loved it.
So here you have it! A simplified, delicious drink that warms you on a chilly night and makes you feel fancy all at once.
The sugar dissolved surprisingly well when stirred for a minute or two. So unless you already have simple syrup ready, there’s no need to wait an extra 30 minutes to enjoy this drink.
The cinnamon also added a lovely spiciness to compliment the richness of bourbon and citrusy burst from lemon. Yes, you could swap out the lemon for orange. And add a dash of bitters if you have it on hand. But if not, enjoy as is in all it’s simple glory!
